Upper West Summit Network

Below are a couple proposed projects planned for the Upper West Summit Trail system which is part of the larger Rabbit Ears Pass Network.  If you have time to look them over and notice anything we might have missed to make them better, please let us know by filling out the comments.  There are many reasons why the projects are proposed the way we have them, but that does not mean an idea you come up with will not make them better.  We are open to constructive criticism (if you think the project could be improved) and praise (if you like the project as described & mapped).  We will not be able to respond to all comments but rest assured that if you take the time to give us your feed back, we will take the time to consider your suggestions.

Walton Rim Trail

posted Nov 24, 2012, 3:49 PM by Eric Meyer   [ updated Mar 4, 2013, 11:23 AM ]

Project Description:

This 20 mile, multi-use trail connects the West Summit of Rabbit Ears Pass to Pete's Wicked Trail on the Steamboat Ski Area.  At roughly  9200 feet, the trail has very little elevation gain, or loss, making it very beginner friendly from both directions, or as an out and back.  Its name comes from Walton Creek Canyon, which the trail circumnavigates as it cruises along the canyon's north and south rim.  The Walton Rim Trail also offers grand vistas of the canyon and Yampa Valley below.

posted Nov 24, 2012, 3:41 PM by Eric Meyer   [ updated Mar 4, 2013, 11:26 AM ]

Project Description:
This 6 mile loop begins and ends at the West Summit of Rabbit Ears Pass. The loop utilizes the first 3 miles of the beginner-friendly Walton Rim Trail before turning and climbing 500 vertical feet to a small peak with commanding views. The loop then gradually descends from its apex at nearly 10,000 feet to the parking lot on flowing intermediate singletrack.

posted Nov 24, 2012, 3:39 PM by Eric Meyer   [ updated Mar 4, 2013, 11:27 AM ]

Project Description:

This 11 mile loop uses the first 7 miles of the beginner friendly Walton Rim Trail before returning to the West Summit parking lot via a 4 mile connecting trail with minimal elevation change. Smooth and wide, this beginner friendly loop is appropriate for all users and provides scenic high alpine vistas.
